The American Hospital of Paris was founded in 1906 with the aim of providing many American expatriates residing in France with medical care in accordance with American practices and in their mother tongue. Recognized by the United States Congress in 1913, the hospital has since become a renowned multi-specialty private hospital.
Since 1954, the American Hospital in Paris has voluntarily submitted to the control of the Joint Commission. This accreditation attests to the safety and quality of the hospital's care and reception services. It is still the only civilian hospital in the world to enjoy such recognition outside the United States.
Like all other health establishments in France, the American Hospital of Paris is also involved in the French certification process organized by the High Authority of Health (HAS).
The American Hospital of Paris is the 1st French health establishment for the measurement of "patient satisfaction" among public and private establishments providing medical, surgical and obstetrical activities (Data 2017, for all patients hospitalized +48h within the American Hospital of Paris and who answered a questionnaire administered by the High Authority of Health).
The American Hospital in Paris is equipped with 135 hospital beds, including 15 maternity beds, 8 multipurpose intensive care beds (ICU), 8 cardiac intensive care beds (CCU) and 4 continuous care beds. The hospital has more than 20 centres and medical units. In order to provide the highest level of care possible, the hospital's services use an interdisciplinary approach, for example in the treatment of cancer or thyroid disease.
Today, the American Hospital of Paris' interpreting services can accompany English, Arabic, Japanese, Russian and Chinese speaking patients throughout their care journey in their native language. Special diets (kosher, gluten-free, vegan, low-fat or low-salt meals) may be offered. The hospital's facilities include a restaurant, tea room and indoor garden.
