Oncology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of cancer patients. We can also talk about cancerology. There are several specialities:
• Medical oncology (coordination of care for chemotherapy);
• Radiotherapy oncology (or radiation oncology);
• Haemato-oncology for blood cancers more specifically.
Since cancers can affect all organs and systems of the body, there are oncologists who specialize in certain types of cancers. For example, oncologists in gynaecology, urology, gastroenterology, neurology, or pediatrics.
Once the cancer diagnosis is made, the first step is to consult with an oncologist for treatment and to discuss the different options. Then, the patient will attend follow-up consultations to discuss treatment progress once it has begun.

It is important to be well prepared before an oncology consultation by preparing any questions you may have about your cancer.
Some complex diseases such as cancer can lead some patients to seek a second medical opinion. 50% of patients who use the second medical opinion have had their treatment options changed. Seeking a second medical opinion is perfectly legitimate when faced with a serious illness.

The role of the oncologist is to supervise and coordinate the overall care of a cancer patient. The oncologist prescribes treatment, assesses drug tolerance and monitors cancer progression.
The patient should consult an oncologist after the diagnosis of a tumour by medical imaging.
Depending on the course of the disease and the treatment, the oncologist may prescribe additional imaging tests, such as a CT or MRI scan or biopsy (sampling of the suspicious lesion).
The oncologist will set up a precise schedule with the patient according to the treatment.
The consultation lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
Cancer treatments, whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy, are aggressive treatments that have many side effects. The management of these adverse events, particularly through the adaptation of chemotherapy doses, is an important part of oncology management.
