Teeth whitening

What you need to know

Teeth whitening is a process known as oxidation. It helps to clear up any yellowing of the teeth.
After a whitening treatment, the teeth are generally 3 to 4 shades whiter. If the teeth to be treated are white or yellow, the treatment will have a better result than if the teeth were brown or grey. Teeth discolour naturally with age and appearance can be affected by the accumulation of discolouration through the consumption of tobacco and certain foods.
Your dentist accompanies you for a personalized result, in harmony with your face and in optimal conditions of safety for your dental health.
Teeth whitening is a non-invasive and painless treatment, it is done in a different way depending on whether the tooth or teeth to be whitened are alive or devitalized. We are talking about internal bleaching as opposed to external bleaching.
There are two methods:
• Home bleaching: the dentist takes an impression of the dental arch and makes gutters. These should be applied by day or night for at least two hours for about 10 to 15 days depending on the degree of discoloration of the teeth.
• In office bleaching: this technique is exclusively practiced In the office but gives almost immediate results.

Before the treatment

Depending on the type of treatment, it is sometimes necessary to make a mould during the first appointment. For other types of treatment, the mould is not necessary.
Teeth whitening does not require anesthesia.

What does it involve?

A tooth whitening gel concentrated in hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth; on this gel is then directed the beam of the lamp that is used to activate the lightening product.
The advantage of chair lightening is that a change of colour can be achieved in a short period of time. In general, the product is renewed every 15 minutes for a treatment time of one hour.
For stubborn discolourations, additional lightening by outpatient treatment may be necessary. It will be a matter of making impressions of your teeth to make molded dental bleaching bows.

About Teeth whitening

Clinical studies have shown that hydrogen peroxide bleaching under the supervision of a dentist is perfectly safe for teeth and gums.
However, the old crowns cannot be lightened, they will have to be redone if necessary to harmonize the shade of your smile.
If you also have composite resins, you should consider redoing them if their colour is no longer suitable after lightening.
Depending on the treatment method chosen by your dentist, you will obtain visible results between the 1st and 14th day of treatment.
