Laser hair removal

What you need to know

Laser hair removal consists of permanently destroying hair with a laser. The laser is a device that delivers a monochromatic beam of photons whose wavelength is absorbed by the melanin of the hair, heating it and destroying it.
It is a permanent hair removal technique that only works on black or dark hair. It also exposes to the risk of absorption of the laser beam by the melanocytes of the skin in the case of matt or tanned skin. You should therefore not expose yourself to the sun before a session in order to never do a session on a slightly tanned skin.
To obtain permanent hair removal, the lower 2/3 of the hairs and their sheath must be coagulated. Hair destroyed by the laser does not grow back. Other hairs may appear, depending on age or hormonal changes.
In the United States, the term "permanent hair removal" is used by the Food and Drug Administration. The term permanent or permanent hair removal refers to more than 15 years of clinical studies that show that generally 80 to 95% of the treated hair does not grow back after a well conducted laser hair removal.
The number of sessions can vary depending on the area to be treated.
The areas most treated by laser hair removal are:
• Armpits
• Legs
• Face
• Arms
• Bikini line
• Beard
• Back
• Hands

Before the treatment

Before laser hair removal, you should not be waxed, power-operated or tweezed at least one month before the first session and throughout the rest of the treatment.
Do not tan, do not apply UV and do not apply self-tanning before and during the treatment.
Any medication or food supplements taken during laser hair removal treatment should be reported.
The laser does not target melanin-free hair (white, red or blond hair).
Shave the area to be treated the day before the session.
To reduce pain, you can apply an anesthetic cream (EMLA or ANESDERM) 2 hours before the laser hair removal session.

What does it involve?

The patient should wear protective glasses during the session. First of all, the doctor must adjust the laser power by pre-testing a small area of your skin. This will allow him to observe the behaviour of the hair (retraction, crackling or expulsion of the root) in order to adapt the power to your characteristics. Laser hair removal is always a personalized process.
Then, the doctor sweeps by hand the area of hair to be removed with the laser. He must perform a precise gesture to be sure to reach all the hair bulbs.
Laser hair removal can be performed without anaesthesia.
The treatment can last from 1 to 4 hours depending on the area to be treated.
Several sessions (3 to 5) are to be scheduled with an interval of at least one month.

After the treatment

After your laser hair removal session, you may notice redness or small red bumps on the skin. That's normal. It looks like a sunburn. A cold compress or latex glove filled with ice cubes applied to the area after the session can help you to absorb this. These rednesses disappear within the next 2 or 3 days, thanks in particular to the application of a vitamin E cream or Biafine.
